Gateway to the Dales

Skipton is a market town in Airedale, Yorkshire. It's situated in the Aire gap which separates the Craven limestone Dales to the north, the gritstone moors to the south, and the Ribble Valley to the west
Located at the south western boundary of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Skipton is often referred to as the "Gateway to the Dales". The town's early history was as a trading centre for sheep and wool - indeed the name Skipton comes from the Saxon word for sheep.
Skipton is the major commercial hub and shopping centre for a large rural area. It has a thriving market held 4 days a week and a variety of interesting pubs and eating places. Attractions in the town itself include Skipton Castle and the Leeds - Liverpool canal.
